Ice Dams: Why New Jersey Roofs Leak in the Middle of Winter
An ice dam is a winter paradox: your roof leaks not because it's broken, but because part of it is too warm. Heat escaping into the attic melts the snowpack from below; the meltwater runs down to the cold overhangs, refreezes into a ridge of ice, and the next round of meltwater pools behind that ridge until it backs up under the shingles — into sheathing, wall cavities and ceilings.
The anatomy of the leak
Shingles shed falling water; they were never designed to hold standing water flowing uphill. Water ponded behind an ice ridge slips under the courses, soaks the sheathing, and follows framing down into exterior walls and the ceilings along outside walls — which is why ice-dam stains classically appear on the ceiling within a few feet of exterior walls, and why the wet cavity often extends well past the visible stain.
Reading your roofline
Thick ice buildup at the eaves and long icicles rows are the visual signature — icicles mean melting, and melting on a snow-covered roof means escaping heat. Inside, watch the tops of exterior walls and ceiling edges after cold snaps that follow snowfalls. Homes with complex rooflines, low-slope sections over additions, and Sussex and Morris County homes carrying deep snowpacks see the worst of it.
What to do — and not do — this winter
A roof rake used from the ground to pull snow off the lower few feet of roof removes the raw material safely. Calcium chloride socks laid across an active dam melt drainage channels. Do not chip ice with hatchets or axes (that's how shingles die), and don't put yourself on an icy roof or ladder for any of this — the damage a dam causes is repairable; falls are worse.
The permanent fix lives in the attic
Ice dams are cured by keeping the roof deck cold: air-seal the ceiling penetrations leaking warm air into the attic, insulate to modern depth, and ensure soffit-to-ridge ventilation moves cold air along the underside of the deck. If a dam has already sent water inside, the cavities and ceiling need real drying — sealed-up wet insulation along an exterior wall is a classic spring mold discovery.
A Note on Category — Not All Water Is Equal
Clean supply water, gray appliance discharge and black contaminated water each demand different handling: what can be dried in place with Category 1 must often be removed with Category 3. Misjudging category is the most common DIY error we see — and it carries real health stakes, since floodwater and sewage can carry pathogens the CDC warns about in its post-flood cleanup guidance. When in doubt about what touched the water, treat it as contaminated.
