The truth has a shape worth knowing: real HVAC mold happens in predictable wet spots, mostly around the cooling side, and the sheet-metal duct runs the ads warn about are rarely the problem.
Where HVAC mold actually grows
Mold needs sustained moisture, and in a forced-air system that exists in specific places: the evaporator coil and its housing (cold, wet by design all summer), the condensate drain pan and line (standing water when clogged or mis-pitched), interior duct insulation liner near the coil that's gotten damp, and flex duct or fiberboard sections with condensation from sweating in humid spaces. Where duct cleaning legitimately fits
Duct cleaning has real use cases: after major construction dust, verified contamination inside ducts, vermin, or renovation of a long-neglected system — and when done, it should follow industry-standard methods with sealed negative pressure. As a routine service or a mold cure, the evidence is thin: authorities on indoor air quality do not recommend routine duct cleaning, and cleaning ducts while leaving a clogged condensate pan is detailing the car around a leaking engine.
Why Containment Isn't Optional
