No phrase in home ownership carries more fear per syllable than 'toxic black mold' — and little of that fear is aimed accurately. Myth: black mold is one specific killer species

But thousands of mold species appear black or near-black, including extremely common Cladosporium and Aspergillus varieties. This is the useful part: remediation protocol is driven by the size of the affected area, the materials involved and the moisture source — not the species. Contain the area, remove contaminated porous materials safely, clean what stays, and fix the water problem. That's the answer for Stachybotrys and it's the answer for every black-looking mold that isn't. Spending hundreds identifying the species rarely buys anything the moisture meter didn't already tell you.
DIY Limits Worth Respecting
Surface growth on non-porous materials in a small area is a legitimate DIY job with detergent, gloves and ventilation — the EPA's cleanup guidance draws its DIY line at roughly ten square feet. The lines that should end the DIY: growth returning after cleaning, anything inside walls or HVAC, contaminated porous materials, or sensitive people in the home. Past those lines, containment and proper removal stop being optional.
